Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap: A Clean Sweep

The Pittsburgh Pirates looked to complete their home stand with a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Pirates have taken care of business against the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies on this home stand and looked to continue their good work against the somewhat struggling Arizona Diamondbacks.

They opened the series with Francisco Liriano looking to build off his good seven inning start vs. the Braves.

Game One: Francisco Liriano (3-3, 4.63ERA) vs. Shelby Miller (1-5, 6.64ERA)

Result: Pirates win 12-1

Winning Pitcher: Francisco Liriano (4-3, 4.30ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Shelby Miller (1-6, 7.09ERA)

  • What went right:
    • Gregory Polanco was an absolute beast. He went 3-5 with a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored.
    • Josh Harrison played very well as he went 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
    • Andrew McCutchen was pretty good and seems to be righting the ship. He went 2-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
    • Pirates as a team went 7-14 with runners in scoring position.
  • What went wrong:
    • Arquimedes Caminero was not very good in relief as he hit two Diamondbacks in the head area and had no idea where the ball was going when he released it.
    • Francisco Liriano wasn’t bad by any means, but he struggled wildly with his command, as he walked five in the game.
    • Philip Gosselin had a pretty decent game for the Diamondbacks. He went 2-4 with a walk and a run scored.
    • Chris Stewart and Cole Figueroa were both thrown out at third base.

Pirates came out and played a very good ballgame and won a fairly easy game. Francisco Liriano pitched fairly well and the bullpen even shut the door for the most part. Arquimedes Caminero was the lone negative in the bullpen as he hit two Diamondbacks in the head area and relit the controversy between the Pirates and D-backs.

The Pirates looked to lock up a series win with Jeff Locke on the mound for game two.

Game Two: Jeff Locke vs. Rubby De La Rosa
