  • What went right:
    • David Freese was the difference in the game as he hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning. He finished the game 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.
    • Andrew McCutchen went 2-4 with a run scored.
    • Jeff Locke pitched okay and kept the team in the ballgame. Which is all you can really ask from a backend starter. He went 6.1 innings, allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out one.
    • Bullpen was very solid as Jared Hughes, Neftali Feliz and Mark Melancon combined to go 2.2 innings of scoreless ball.
  • What went wrong:
    • Rickie Weeks had a pretty good game as he went 2-4 with a home run, one RBI and a run scored.
    • Chris Owings had a double and finished the game 2-4 with one RBI and a run scored.
    • Yasmany Tomas hit a home run and finished the game 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.
    • Diamondbacks bullpen also did a good job as Jake Barrett, Zac Curtis and Tyler Clippard combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings.

The Pirates officially clinched the series victory and played a mostly solid ballgame. The offense didn’t do much after the fifth inning, but thankfully Jeff Locke and the bullpen did a good enough job to seal the victory.

The Pirates turned to their ace looking to complete the sweep.
