Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap: A Clean Sweep

Game Three: Gerrit Cole (5-3, 2.79ERA) vs. Patrick Corbin (2-3, 3.99ERA)

Result: Pirates win 8-3

Winning Pitcher: A.J. Schugel (1-1, 5.30ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Patrick Corbin (2-4, 4.21ERA)

  • What went right:
    • Josh Harrison had a big pinch hit two-RBI double that put the Pirates ahead for good in the sixth inning.
    • Jung Ho Kang had a pretty big game as he went 3-5 with two RBIs.
    • Gerrit Cole didn’t pitch his best game but he limited the damage and battled through five innings, allowed one run on seven hits and struck out five. He also did some damage with the bat as he hit a three-run home run and hit a double.
    • Francisco Cervelli reached base twice as he went 1-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • What went wrong:
    • A.J. Schugel did not pitch very well, despite getting the win. He allowed two runs on three hits and walked one.
    • Kyle Lobstein did not record an out in his relief appearance as he allowed one hit and one walk.
    • Paul Goldschmidt was given way too many opportunities and eventually cashed in with a bases loaded single to drive in two. He finished the game 1-5 with two RBIs.
    • Jean Segura was very good from the lead-off spot. He went 2-5 with two runs scored.
