Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap: Death by Paper cuts

It’s really easy to panic when the Pirates struggle early in the season, but baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. We all wanted a better start, but still plenty of time to turn April around and make it a good first month of the season.

The Pirates played their brand of baseball the last two games of the Milwaukee series. They made the starting pitchers work for every single out and were really stubborn in their approaches at the plate. If the Pirates’ offense comes together this season, you will see a lot of games like the Sunday game against the Brewers. Obviously you won’t see every player in the lineup with a hit all the time, but the consistently workman, death by paper cut approach. The team may not hit a ton of three-run home runs this season, but if the plan works, they will hit and walk their way to a lot of runs scored. All runs are weighted equally, so as long as the team is scoring, it doesn’t matter how many home runs they hit.

A series win against the Brewers should be expected as Milwaukee is rebuilding, but it’s still nice to see the Pirates mostly play well and beat a team they should. So far in 2016, the Pirates look more prepared to take on their NL Central opponents and as we know, that was the difference between the division title and the wildcard last season.

The Pirates are off on Monday and will then turn their attention to the San Diego Padres as Francisco Liriano returns to the mound after skipping his last start due to hamstring discomfort.

Series Result: Pirates win 2-1

2016 win/loss record: 7-6

2016 series record: 2-2
