- What went right:
- John Jaso was a beast again for the Pirates. He played good defense at first base and did a lot from the plate. He went 3-4 with a home run and two RBI.
- Gerrit Cole had a tough 33 pitch first inning, but followed that up by pretty much keeping the Cardinals’ bats quiet. He finished with a really good outing of six innings, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven.
- Chris Stewart did plenty of smart hitting in this game as he went 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
- Tony Watson had an outing we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him. A fairly quick and painless three up, three down inning.
- What went wrong:
- Matt Carpenter may be the biggest Pirate-killer of them all. He finished 2-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
- Stephen Piscotty had a really big game as he went 4-5 with a run scored.
- Kyle Lobstein committed the biggest sin of any pitcher pitching with a big lead, he walked two batters. The result of the walks lead to the Cardinals getting back into the game in the seventh inning. He finished by allowing three runs on one hit, but talked two in 0.2 innings of work.
- Ryan Vogelsong didn’t pitch too well either as he allowed the Cardinals to load the bases, which forced Clint Hurdle to use Mark Melancon in another manufactured save situation.
