Game Two: Jeff Locke (0-1, 2.53ERA) vs. Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 3.27ERA)
Result: Pirates lose 8-2
Winning Pitcher: Drew Pomeranz (2-1, 2.04ERA)
Losing Pitcher: Jeff Locke (0-2, 7.24ERA)
- What went right:
- Jordy Mercer had three hits from the lead-off spot, he finished 3-4 with one RBI.
- The bullpen actually had a fairly solid game as Kyle Lobstein and A.J. Schugel combined to go five innings, allowed zero runs on one hit with four strikeouts.
- David Freese walked twice and had a run scored.
- Since the game was out of hand, you didn’t have to stay up as late to watch the end of it.
- What went wrong:
- Jeff Locke was absolutely terrible. He lasted only three innings, gave up eight runs on 11 hits and walked four. His defense did let him down a little bit, but any time a starting pitcher gives up that many runs and walks four in a short outing, they didn’t pitch well, plain and simple.
- Drew Pomeranz kept the Pirates off-balance all night. He had a very good game, going 6.2 innings, allowing one run (zero earned) on four hits and struck out 10.
- Derek Norris had a fairly good game, going 2-4 with two runs scored.
- Matt Kemp had a good game, going 2-4 with a home run and one RBI
- The Padres cashed in on a lot of their opportunities, going 7-11 with runners in scoring position.
This game completely stunk. Mama always said there’d be nights like this, but doesn’t make it less annoying.
Jeff Locke has obviously never been super popular with a large chunk of the fan base and this game will not help that. He looked absolutely terrible. He looked so bad that fans are calling for Ryan Vogelsong to take his place in the rotation, Baseball is a funny game.
The Pirates looked to avoid the sweep by sending their ace, Gerrit Cole to the mound, needing him to play the role of stopper.
Game Three: Gerrit Cole vs. James Shields
