Result: Pirates win 11-1

Winning Pitcher: Gerrit Cole (1-2, 2.70ERA)

Losing Pitcher: James Shields (0-3, 4.15ERA

  • What went right:
    • Gerrit Cole did what aces do as he stopped the losing streak. He pitched a pretty good game too, going six innings, allowing zero runs on four hits and striking out seven.
    • Josh Harrison was a spark plug with the bat and on the bases. He went 2-4 with a walk, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.
    • Starling Marte played a big part on the base-paths too, going 2-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
    • The Pirates offense exploded in a big way, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits and going 6-12 with runners in scoring position.
  • What went wrong:
    • David Freese grounded into another double play, bringing his league leading total up to six.
    • Melvin Upton Jr. stole a base.
    • Rob Scahill did not have a great inning of work, allowing one run on one hit.
    • Even in a blowout win, Jon Jay continued to haunt the Pirates, going 2-4 with one RBI.
