Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap – Losing the Battle and the War

The Pittsburgh Pirates are playing possibly their worst baseball of the season right now. They aren’t pitching well, they aren’t hitting well and two key players in Francisco Cervelli and Gerrit Cole are both out with injuries. It’s just a perfect storm of a bad stretch of baseball.

I’m about as optimistic as it gets and the Pirates will start playing better and get back to winning baseball games, but right now today’s off day might be coming at the perfect time. The team needs a mental break from the grind and I think the fans need a break from watching the team.

I’ve always said this about baseball, you’re never as good as you look when you’re playing at your best and you’re never as bad as you look when you’re playing at your worst. The answer is somewhere in between and currently the Pirates are not a bad team, they’re simply a decent team that’s in a massive funk. They will bounce back and begin to play better baseball. Whether they can catch the Chicago Cubs remains to be seen, but they need to simply focus on playing better and let the rest of the regular season play out.

The Pirates will look to start playing better when they begin a three game series against the Mets in New York on Tuesday. Not sure who is pitching for the Pirates yet, but Jacob deGrom is on the bump for the Mets. First pitch is at 7:10pm.

I also want to send out my hearty congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on winning their fourth Stanley Cup. It is the hardest trophy to win in all of professional sports and this is a wonderful accomplishment for both the team and the city of Pittsburgh. The City of Champions can add another championship banner and it doesn’t get much better than that.

Series Result: Pirates lose 3-0

2016 win/loss record: 32-30

2016 series record: 10-9-1
