Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap – A National Nightmare

This was a very tough series for the Pirates. They got completely outplayed in the first two games and had to scratch and claw to salvage game three. Most people knew this series would be tough for the Pirates but getting outscored 11-1 in the first two games is never good. The team did show resolve in outlasting the Nationals in the 18 inning game three.

The Pirates currently sit two games above .500 but are about to enter a series with the Milwaukee Brewers. This could be a good chance for the Pirates to win a series and get some distance between them and .500. However, nothing is guaranteed in baseball and the Pirates cannot overlook the Brewers.

The Pirates’ starting pitcher outside of Gerrit Cole looked a lot better in the Nationals series. Both Francisco Liriano and Chad Kuhl had good starts. Cole will be fine as he was making his first start coming off the DL. Despite the series loss, there are some areas to be encouraged. The offense only mustering three runs in the series is definitely terrible, but not something I expect will become a trend.

The Pirates will enjoy a well-deserved off-day today before beginning a three-game series against the Brewers at PNC Park on Tuesday. Jameson Taillon will make his return from the DL and face Junior Guerra. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Series Result: Pirates lose 2-1

2016 win/loss record: 47-45

2016 series record: 14-13-2
