  • What went right:
    • Josh Harrison went 2-3 and played his usual solid defense had second base.
    • Andrew McCutchen reached base twice as he went 1-3 with a walk.
    • Matt Joyce had a pinch hit walk and scored the Pirates’ lone run.
    • Gerrit Cole pitched fairly well as he went 6.1 innings, allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out four.
  • What went wrong:
    • Jose Fernandez was a beast for the Marins. He went seven innings, allowed zero runs on three hits and struck out six.
    • Starling Marte was caught trying to steal second base.
    • Gerrit Cole allowed nine hits, two walks and had to pitch out of jams all night.
    • J. T. Realmuto went 3-4 with a run scored.

In the battle of aces, Gerrit Cole was out pitched by Jose Fernandez and despite both pitching into the seventh inning, Fernandez had a much smoother start than Cole. The Pirates didn’t generate a lot of traffic on the base paths, while the Marlins had runners in scoring position almost all night.

The Pirates looked to bounce back with Jon Niese trying to continue his streak of good starts.
