This was not a very good road trip for the Pirates. They went 2-5, despite winning game one of each series. They set themselves up in each series, but weren’t able to finish the job. This Marlins series particular was very frustrating because each loss was close and definitely could have gone the Pirates’ way with maybe one extra hit per game.
I am sure the “sky is falling” fans are going to be very loud after this series, but baseball is a game of ebbs and flows and right now the Pirates are in a bit of a funk, but that doesn’t mean they can’t play out of it. This team went 8-2 during a 10 game streak and are now 2-5 in their last seven games. That’s pretty much baseball in a nut shell. You’re going to have times where you seemingly can’t lose and then you’re going to have streaks where it seems like you can’t win.
Losing any series is annoying, but each game was very close and the Pirates could have very easily won the series against the Marlins, so it’s hard for me to read too much into this series. The Pirates weren’t outclassed or embarrassed, they simply lost three very close games, including two one-run games. Those kind of games are definitely frustrating, but the Marlins are an improved team and losing a series on the road isn’t the end of the world, nor is it the end of the season. Just have to focus on playing better in the next series.
The Pirates will look to bounce back as they return home to begin a series against the great Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as Francisco Liriano takes on Jared Weaver. First pitch is at 7:05pm.
Series Result: Pirates lose 3-1
2016 Win/loss record: 29-23
2016 series record: 9-7-1
