Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap: Do the Pirates really need a bullpen?

Game Three: Francisco Liriano (1-1, 4.11ERA) vs. Robbie Ray (1-0, 1.96ERA)

Result: Pirates win 12-10 (13 innings)

Winning Pitcher: Neftali Feliz (1-0, 3.86ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Evan Marshall (0-1, 3.00ERA)

Save: Arquimedes Caminero (1, 5.40ERA)

  • What went right:
    • Starling Marte had a monster game, going 4-6 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
    • David Freese was a machine with the bat, going 3-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
    • Francisco Liriano did not have have his best stuff early in the game, but really recovered and settled into a good groove and looked way more the pitcher has has been during his entire Pirates’ career. He ended up going six innings, allowed four runs on five hits and striking out six.
    • Kyle Lobstein had two huge scoreless innings of relief and while he didn’t factor into the decision, he played a big part in the victory.
  • What went wrong:
    • Paul Goldschmidt completely busted out of his funk, going 2-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. He was his usual beastly self.
    • Wellington Castillo had a big game on his birthday, going 3-5 with three RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
    • Francisco Cervelli had a pretty bad base-running mistake in the 12th inning, getting thrown out trying to take third on a bad pick-off attempt. He ended up being out by a mile and potentially cost the Pirates a run.
    • The bullpen had a rough day at the office as Ryan Vogelsong, Mark Melancon and Neftali Feliz combined to go three innings and allowed six runs on seven hits.
