Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap: Do the Pirates really need a bullpen?

The Pittsburgh Pirates won this series, over the Diamondbacks but the mood is understandably tense as the bullpen was really bad for all three games and has been a consistent issue for most of the first 19 games of the regular season.

I wouldn’t bury the Pirates yet as things can be corrected and there’s almost no way the bullpen can pitch this badly the entire season. It’s something I’ve consistently said and will continue to say, things tend to normalize over 162 games. You’re already seeing that with the hitting with runners in scoring position. After a fairly poor start in that regard, the Pirates have rebounded nicely and hit .357 over their last six games.

The Pirates’ pitching needs to improve, but right now the offense may be one of the most dynamic in baseball. They might not hit many home runs, but they will grind you out and hit their way into a lot of big innings. The games may take three hours or more, but if the team can start a win streak, I don’t think we’ll see any fans complaining about length of games.

The Pirates’ reward for their series win in Chase Field is to travel to another offensive ballpark in Colorado as they prepare for a four game series against the Rockies. Game one is scheduled to begin at 8:40pm as Jeff Locke takes on Chad Bettis of the Rockies.

Series Result: Pirates win 2-1

2016 win/loss record: 10-9

2016 series record: 3-3
