Losing Pitcher: Arquimedes Caminero (0-1, 2.08ERA)
- What went right:
- Jeff Locked pitched a good game, probably to the surprise of many. He went six innings, allowed one run on seven hits and struck out one.
- John Jaso was once again very good from the lead-off spot and played fairly solid defense at first base.
- Chris Stewart finally hit his first home run as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates and it was a beautiful moment that no one will forget. Smart hitting, indeed!
- Gregory Polanco walked twice, continuing his focus on having a much more intelligent approach at the plate.
- What went wrong:
- The Pirates once again failed to capitalize on many opportunities, going 1-14 with runners in scoring position while stranding 14 runners on base.
- The Pirates weren’t able to really take advantage of a young pitcher making his MLB debut. Melville did not throw well, but he danced out of trouble and kept the Reds in the game, which is precisely what they wanted.
- Eugenio Suarez had a fantastic game for the Reds. Going 3-4 with a home run.
- Jay Bruce won the game for the Reds with a walk-off triple, scoring Brandon Phillips from first base.
