  • What went right:
    • Gerrit Cole shoved when the team needed it most. He went eight innings, allowed zero runs on three hits and struck out seven.

    • Jordy Mercer reached base twice from the lead-off spot. He went 1-4 with a walk.
    • Starling Marte went 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • What went wrong:
    • Jon Lester had a no-hitter until the seventh inning and all things considered had an excellent start. He went 6.2 innings, allowed one run on two hits and struck out nine.
    • Dexter Fowler continued to haunt the Pirates as he went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
    • Mark Melancon wasn’t super sharp despite getting the save. He allowed one run on one hit and walked a batter.
