- What went right:
- Gerrit Cole shoved when the team needed it most. He went eight innings, allowed zero runs on three hits and struck out seven.
- Jung Ho Kang continued to be obscenely impressive in his return from injury. He went 2-4 with a home run, a run scored and two RBI.
- Jordy Mercer reached base twice from the lead-off spot. He went 1-4 with a walk.
- Starling Marte went 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
- What went wrong:
- Jon Lester had a no-hitter until the seventh inning and all things considered had an excellent start. He went 6.2 innings, allowed one run on two hits and struck out nine.
- Dexter Fowler continued to haunt the Pirates as he went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
- Mark Melancon wasn’t super sharp despite getting the save. He allowed one run on one hit and walked a batter.
- Anthony Rizzo drove in another batter against the Pirates.
