The Pirates had a fairly brutal schedule for most of the first half of the season. The second half has mostly been a bit softer and the Pirates have mostly done their part. They have gone 5-3 in their last eight games and won two out of their last three series. A two-game split is a fairly neutral outcome and the Mariners aren’t a bad team by any means.
The Pirates currently find themselves at 52-48 and eight games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Not the most ideal situation, but the Pirates seem to be just chugging along at the moment. The last time the Pirates played the Mariners, they were 38-41. Since that time they are 14-7 and really haven’t put it all together yet. Gerrit Cole said it best after the 10-1 victory over Seattle, “We’re dangerous.” This team has a lot of talent and they really haven’t hit their peak yet. The biggest problem with the 2015 Pirates was the team peaked in July and August. Nobody likes playing mostly .500 ball for the bulk of the season, but perhaps this team will finally get hot at the right time and make a run. No one can know for sure, but stranger things have happened.
The Pirates will enjoy an off-day before beginning a three-game road series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Game one will feature Steven Brault taking on Junior Guerra. First pitch is at 8:10pm.
Series Result: 1-1
2016 win/loss record: 52-48
2016 series record: 16-13-3
