Following a disastrous road trip, the Pirates really needed a good series against the Reds. They took two out of three games, but it really didn’t feel all that impressive. Winning ugly is better than losing, but I doubt many people feel better about the Pirates’ chances to go on an August/September run than they did before the series began.
The Pirates currently feel stuck. There is a lot of baseball left to be played but I don’t think many fans are overly optimistic at the moment. The trade deadline and the 1-5 road trip against the Braves and Brewers really didn’t instill much confidence in the 2016 Pirates. Oddly enough, I felt more disappointment in this Reds’ series that they won.
Watching the team’s effort in their 7-3 loss in game three just left me feeling so uninspired. The team looked listless and disinterested. I have zero doubt that they care and desperately want to win, but their effort just seemed off.
Billy Hamilton continued to be the most unlikely thorn in the Pirates’ side. He is a below average MLB hitter until he’s facing Pirates’ pitching. Watching him reach base four times and steal four bases just annoyed me. I felt annoyed watching this team’s effort. Which is not usually something that happens to me. Unless something changes, I am not super confident that the team will be able to turn things around in August and September. That being said, there is still a lot of baseball left to be played.
The Pirates will enjoy a day off before beginning a three-game series with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Game one will feature Chad Kuhl taking on Luis Perdomo. First pitch is at 7:05pm.
Series Result: Pirates win 2-1
2016 win/loss record: 55-54
2016 series record: 17-15-3
