Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap – A Windy City Beatdown

The Pittsburgh Pirates are currently in a huge June-swoon. They just can’t seem to bust out of their funk and this series featured all their problems mixed together in one hodgepodge of sadness. The Pirates starters couldn’t go deep into the games and the bullpen was bad the entire series, and the offense wasn’t able to take advantage of their opportunities in any of the three games.

The Pirates currently find themselves three games under .500 and 14 games behind the Cubs in the central division. You never want to declare a season over in June, but their division chances are pretty much slim to none. The season isn’t a complete lost cause as the Pirates are still only four games behind in the NL Wildcard standings. I know most of us are sick of the one game playoff, but the goal is to win the World Series and being in that game gives you a chance and that’s all anyone can hope for. So despite the terrible June, I wouldn’t completely bury the Pirates yet. The local hockey team is proof that sports are about playing your best at the end of the season, not the middle of it.

The Pirates’ schedule doesn’t get any easier as they begin a four game home series with the San Francisco Giants starting tonight. The Giants are currently first place in the NL West and one of the best teams in the league, so ending this poor stretch won’t be easy. To make matters worse, Madison Bumgarner is on the mound for the Giants and a struggling Jeff Locke is pitching for the Pirates. Not the most ideal pitching match-up for the home team, but you have to play the game and see how it shakes out. First pitch is at 7:05pm.

Series Result: Pirates lose 3-0

2016 win/loss record: 33-36

2016 series record: 10-11-1
