Result: Pirates win 4-2

Winning Pitcher: Jon Niese (7-6, 4.87ERA)

  • What went right:
    • John Jaso was excellent from the leadoff spot. He went 2-3 with a walk, one RBI, and a run scored.
    • Gregory Polanco was the difference in the game as he went 2-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
    • Jon Niese pitched fairly well as he went 5.1 innings, allowed one run on eight hits and struck out three.
  • What went wrong:
    • Matt Carpenter did what he always does to the Pirates. He went 3-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
    • Andrew McCutchen‘s poor road trip continued as he went 0-4.
    • Carlos Martinez went 2-2 at the plate for the Cardinals.

Game Two: Steven Brault (0-0, 0.00ERA) vs. Mike Leake (5-6, 4.13ERA)

Result: Pirates win 5-2

Winning Pitcher: Juan Nicasio (7-6, 5.27ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Mike Leake (5-7, 4.33ERA)

Save: Mark Melancon (25, 1.31ERA)

  • What went right:
    • Eric Fryer haunted his former team as he went 2-4 with three RBIs.
    • David Freese gave his fans in St. Louis a lot to cheer for as he went 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
    • Andrew McCutchen went 2-4.
  • What went wrong:
    • Jedd Gyorko went 2-4 with a run scored.
    • John Jaso went 0-3 and grounded into a double play.
    • Andrew McCutchen was picked off of first base.

Game Three: Jeff Locke (8-5, 5.13ERA) vs. Jaime Garcia (6-6, 3.84ERA)

Result: Pirates win 7-5

Winning Pitcher: A.J. Schugel (2-2, 3.40ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Jonathan Broxton (1-1, 3.93ERA)

Save: Mark Melancon (26, 1.27ERA)

  • What went right:
    • David Freese had another big game as he went 2-3 with a home run, two walks, one RBI, and two runs scored.
    • Jung Ho Kang played very well. He went 1-4 with a walk, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
    • Sean Rodriguez went 2-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • What went wrong:
    • Aledmys Díaz had a big game for the Cardinals as he went 3-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.
    • Jeff Locke did not have a very good game. He went four innings, allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out three.
    • Pirates went 3-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight men on base.

Game Four: Tyler Glasnow (0-0, 0.00ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (7-5, 4.70ERA)

Result: Pirates lose 5-1

Winning Pitcher: Adam Wainwright (8-5, 4.49ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Tyler Glasnow (0-1, 6.75ERA)

  • What went right:
    • Tyler Glasnow’s final line didn’t reflect it, but he pitched fairly well. He allowed four runs on three hits in 5.1 innings of work. He also recorded his first Major League hit.
    • Jordy Mercer went 1-3 with a walk and one RBI.
    • Jared Hughes had two very good innings of scoreless relief.
  • What went wrong:
    • Adam Wainwright looked like the pitcher he was a few years ago as he went seven innings, allowed one run on five hits and struck out nine.
    • Stephen Piscotty provided the big blow for the Cardinals as he went 1-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored.
    • Pirates went 0-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded six men on base.
