Pittsburgh Pirates Shut Down Gerrit Cole

The Pittsburgh Pirates have shut down Cole for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review is reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates have shut down Gerrit Cole for the rest of the 2016 season.

Technically, Cole will be placed on the 60-day DL. At the time of this writing, there is no word if the elbow soreness has escalated into a more serious issue.

With the move, Cole’s 2016 season officially becomes a season of lost potential amidst high expectations. Bothered by slight injuries to start his spring training preparations, Cole never got on solid footing as the season commenced.

His full 2016 stats are as shown:

Year Age W L ERA GS CG IP H R ER HR BB SO FIP WHIP BB9 SO9 SO/W
2016 25 7 10 3.88 21 1 116.0 131 57 50 7 36 98 3.32 1.440 2.8 7.6 2.72

Cole made just one start after coming off of a recent DL stint due to elbow inflammation. It was not a pretty affair, with Cole struggling to two innings, allowing five earned runs.

Having just turned 26, there is absolutely no reason to think that Cole’s best years are not in front of him, barring significant injury of course. The debate on whether or not Cole is a legitimate “ace” rages, but with his talent, there is no reason to suspect that he cannot be a top-end starter in the Major Leagues. Cole will be entering his first year of arbitration in the offseason, and the lingering injuries plus ineffectiveness should make the process very interesting. The Pittsburgh Pirates are traditionally a “file and trial” club, though last season saw them avoid arbitration with most who were eligible.

Pirates Breakdown will have more on this in the coming days.
