Pittsburgh Pirates Social Media Round-Up: Coffee, Babies and Trolls

The Pittsburgh Pirates go west and hit the town.

 

It’s July! Summer is in full swing. The hockey and basketball playoffs are over. Football season hasn’t started yet, which means baseball is FINALLY the center of attention for the US (of course, until the Olympics), and it is fabulous. The Pirates are on a west coast swing that’s taken them to Seattle and Oakland, and we get to go along, at least through social media that is.

A very sharp dressed Starling Marte got everyone in the mood for a roadtrip, sharing some tunes on the way to the airport:

Rookie Chad Kuhl is getting his second major league start tonight against the A’s. He’s working on getting his second win after besting Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the Pirates’ June 26 4-3 win. He celebrated that first one in routine Pirates fashion – with a gift from Bones.

But took time out first to reward fans who stuck around after the game.

Here’s hoping the Pirates’ announcers don’t make bad puns on his last name all game like they did a week ago.

While we’re talking about pitchers, Mark Melancon‘s University of Arizona Wildcats were in the college World Series, and he’s been cheering them on all week (they lost to Coastal Carolina). He shared a fun photo and lovely memory about his time representing the Wildcats at the CWS on Tuesday:

Speaking of beautiful wives, Matt Joyce and wife Brittany shared some wonderful news today – there’s a #babyJontheway! Congrats!

Soon, Baby J will be doing this at PNC!

Joyce and his teammates John Jaso and Jeff Locke, along with their lovely spouses, took advantage of the Pirates’ first off-day in 16 games to do the tourist thang in the Bay Area.

Also exploring on the road trip is rookie Jameson Taillon, who I can say with almost certainly, really likes coffee.

He visited the Golden Gate Bridge in the Bay Area with his former Indy Indians and now Pittsburgh Pirates teammates Adam Frazier and Chad Kuhl.

Francisco Cervelli had nearly the same visit out west. First, he went for coffee in Seattle (he seems to like it, er, love it, too):

Then he hung out at a slightly different area of the Golden Gate Bridge with his teammates, Jung-Ho Kang and HK Kim, whom he dubs his “Korean Brothers.” Good looks and mad baseball playing skills run deep in THAT family!

Cervy isn’t just about hanging out and drinking coffee, though. While on the DL, he’s still grinding away at the gym, keeping himself ready for his return.

Speaking of WORK – Josh Harrison was doing his, as a husband, by promoting his wife Brittney’s handbag company and their 4th of July sale. The bags are fantastic, AND a portion of the sale of every one goes toward the fight against breast cancer.

Sean Rodriguez is equally supportive of his wife Giselle so it seems, except for perhaps one thing she revealed:

Jung-Ho Kang got to mix work with pleasure in Seattle, meeting up with old friend and former KBO rival Dae-Ho Lee, who plays first for the Mariners.

The Buccos also got to visit with an old friend in Seattle. Pedro Alvarez, visiting for a series against the Mariners as an Oriole, was caught on camera taking in the game from the stands.

Intrepid baseball reporter Matt Gajtka shared that he made a post-game visit to the clubhouse to catch up with everyone.

Juan Nicasio is adjusting well to the Pirates bullpen and is pitching like the guy who was the TALK of spring training. Two things could be going on here:

1.) He’s getting more rest as evidenced by this:

And because we always want to leave you with a smile on your face, here’s a fun story. The Pirates did an autograph thing last week at the convention center in Pittsburgh, and a guy trolled Gregory Polanco about it on Twitter, saying that it was ridiculous that baseball players making millions would charge for autographs (that tweet has been since erased). Polanco responded thusly:

Then hundreds of fans stepped up in Gregory’s defense, tweeting photos of Polanco signing autographs all over the place for free.

Seems the heat got too hot for the troll, and he eventually blocked Polanco. Who really enjoyed it, tweeting this:

Not surprisingly, the account above no longer exists, and one more twitter user learned the hard way that being a jerk never pays.

In the Media

The Players’ Tribune published a portrait gallery of baseball players who are having a moment this season to mark the halfway point. There are two stunning images of Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole.

And because I can, I urge you to take a minute or two and read Pirates Breakdown’s own, Jason Rollison’s interview with Johnny Rodriguez, who is managing the State College Spikes (Cardinals Single-A short season affiliates) this season, about his sons’ breakout year with the Bucs.
