Pittsburgh Pirates Social Media Round-up: Home is Where the Wins Are

Pittsburgh Pirates are all about veterans, family, rookies and style.

The Pirates have won five of their last six games and have five more at home before hitting the road to take on the Rangers. After two wickedly long road stretches almost back-to-back, it’s safe to say the team is happy to be back home for a little while.

I’m going out on a limb here and suggesting reliever Jared Hughes might be a gamer?

The Pirates family just got a little bigger with the addition of a new Marte. Tiana Marte was born to Starling and his lovely wife Noelia on Tuesday, May 17. Marte was off on paternity leave for three days and returned to the line-up Thursday.

Congrats to Alen Hanson who got called up to the show this week while Marte was spending a few days bonding with his little “princesita.”

Also making his MLB debut this week, reliever Wilfredo Boscan

And he got his first strikeout, too!

To celebrate the upcoming U.S. Open Golf Championship at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, the US Open Championship Trophy was in the Pirates’ clubhouse and all over PNC Park Thursday.

Also on Thursday night, the Pirates did a very cool thing to honor active-duty military and veterans alike. The guys wore their camo jerseys. Pirates Charities donated their 50/50 proceeds to a Vets organization, and some very special guests joined the players on the field.

In case you’ve been living under a rock this week, the Pirates locked down catcher, and I daresay the most popular Italian/Venezuelan to ever play baseball in the history of the world, Francisco Cervelli to a three-year, $31 million contract on Tuesday. He had this to say about the decision:

He actually had more to say than that during the morning press conference, where he showed up looking dapper and as happy as ever:

In a touching moment following the event, he spent a few moments with his long-time girlfriend:

with whom he likely later shared the bubbly given to him by a teammate.

If you don’t have plans August 17, and have some spare cash to donate to a worthy cause, you could be wining and dining with Josh Harrison. The popular second baseman is passionate about helping children in need, and the proceeds from his All-Star Dinner will go toward that goal.

And if you’d like to get up close and personal with the “Salt” half of the Salt and Pepper duo, mark your calendars for May 23.

From an undisclosed location, the red-hot Jung-ho Kang appears on Instagram – check out that stylin’ phone case…

And also stylin? El Coffee – with coffee natch – on a travel day.

In the Media

On Tuesday, following the official announcement of his contract extension, Cervelli published this missive in The Players’ Tribune that is definitely worth the read:

If you watched the game on RootSports Pittsburgh Friday night, Broadcasters Greg Brown and John Wehner had a special visitor to the booth – Miss Pennsylvania Elena LaQuatra. Turns out, non-baseball interviews are harder than they look and the guys riffed on themselves after her appearance for their line of questioning. “I asked her what she does,” the Rock quipped while Brown admitted that their interview skills left something to be desired.

The Pirates take on the Rockies today at 4:05 (if the rain doesn’t spoil everything). Enjoy the rest of your weekend and #LetsGoBucs!
