All work for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first week of spring training

Here’s our weekly Pittsburgh Pirates Social Media Round-up for the past week as the team gets set for spring training games.

Welcome to a brief edition of our weekly Pirates social media round-up (brief because those Buccos are hard at work getting back into regular season form and not focusing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).

Spring training is not just a time for players to get back into full-playing mode, it’s also a time for them to try out new equipment, break in new cleats, etc. Several of the Bucs were excited to share images of their new gloves…

And of course, Starling Marte’s was just a little extra special this year…

Early in the week, Jared Hughes and fellow reliever Mark Melancon also test-drove the new proposed protective hat/helmet/headgear for pitchers. They are designed to be lightweight and non-cumbersome and protect pitchers’ heads from comebackers – which have caused some major injuries over the years. Rumor has it MLB is rolling out full body armor next season…(I kid).

When not working out at Pirate City, the guys spent some down time in front of the TV. Jameson Taillon showed he’s got a good idea of how brothers should treat sisters, and shed some light on his guilty pleasures…

Jordy Mercer caught a little racing…

John Holdzkom agreed that the Abner Doubleday scene from the Adam Sandler flop The Ridiculous 6 was likely historically accurate…

And Cutch got a little tired of one particular commercial…

Francisco Cervelli also got some TV time in, only he was the star – not the viewer. Root Sports tweeted that the fireball catcher wore a microphone during some training for a future episode of Inside Pirates Baseball.

Not everyone was hanging out in front of the tube, however. Sean Rodriguez traded his uniform in for a jacket and tie and attended a Father/Daughter dance with his girls. All together now – AWWWWWW!
