The Pittsburgh Pirates fail to sweep the Milwaukee Brewers, dropping the series finale 3-1.
The the bats went silent for the Pirates tonight as they collected only one run on five hits in the loss.
Takeaways
- Francisco Cervelli hit his first home run of the year tonight. It was his first dinger since September 30th of last year. His slugging percentage is now at .317, 60 points lower than his .377 on base percentage. All jokes aside, it was nice to see Cervelli get his first round tripper of the season. Maybe he can string together one or two more before the season ends.
Throwaways
- David Freese’s slump continued tonight as he went 0-3 with two strikeouts. He now only has one hit in his last 14 at bats and is hitting just .230 since the All-Star break. The Pirates will need Freese to return to his first half self next season if they want full value from his contract extension.
- Ryan Vogelsong didn’t look too bad tonight. A lead off walk to start the game followed by a Scooter Gennett home run got the Brewers out to an early 2-0 lead. Vogelsong settled in and pitched four innings giving up those two runs only. He looked much better than he has lately but at the same time he still only threw four innings giving up two runs. That is not quite a quality start.
- The offense was disappointing tonight collecting only five hits, two of which came from Andrew McCutchen. After a week of mashing the baseball, the bats were cold as the Pirates could only muster up one run.
- Starling Marte was removed from the game in the middle of his third at bat due to the continuous problem with his back. You just hope that the injury did not get any more serious than it already was.
W – Chase Anderson (9-11)
L – Ryan Vogelsong (3-6)
S – Tyler Thornburg (12)
Line of the Game
Andrew McCutchen was 2-4 with a double. He batting average is up to .257 for the season.
