Pittsburgh Pirates Takeaways & Throwaways: Five Straight Wins at Miller Park

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 tonight as four Pirates had multi-hit games.

The offense got going early tagging Matt Garza for five runs over four innings.  The Pirates have now won five of their last six games.

Takeaways

  • The offense put on a clinic tonight smashing 13 hits.  Adam Frazier led the way with three hits.  Andrew McCutchen, Francisco Cervelli, and Jordy Mercer added two hits each.  McCutchen’s two run double in the first inning got the Pirates going early and they never looked back leading the whole game.
  • Adam Frazier was an excellent catalyst for the offense as he scored two runs to go along with his three hits.  He is now slashing .351/.403/.491 in the big leagues this year.  Frazier has been a great hitter even with two strikes.  Before tonight’s game, his average after two strikes was .345.  Frazier has arguably been the Pirate’s most impressive rookie this season.
  • Josh Bell has also been an impressive rookie for the Pirates showing off his great plate disipline.  That continued tonight as he was 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  His two run single came in the fifth inning when after he worked the count full.  He’s now slashing .312/.416/.462 in the majors this season with two home runs and eight doubles.
  • The bullpen was dominant tonight as they didn’t allow a run in five innings pitched.  As a whole, they allowed only two hits, one walk, while striking out seven.  The bullpen did a fine job shutting down the Brewers after Steven Brault’s shaky start.

Throwaways

  • Steven Brault failed to get on a roll tonight as he gave up three earned runs in four plus innings pitched.  In his seven starts, Brault has made it through six innings just once.  Command has been the biggest issue with Brault and that showed tonight as he only threw 53 of 88 pitches for strikes.  Although he only allowed two walks, Brault found himself in plenty of deep counts leading to yet another short outing.  Brault has had chances this year and has looked good at certain points.  That being said, he needs throw strikes more consistently if he ever wants to be a regular starting pitcher in the majors.

W – Jared Hughes (1-1)

L – Matt Garza (5-8)

S – Tony Watson (14)

Line of the Game
