Pittsburgh Pirates Takeaways & Throwaways – Offense Picks Up Taillon After Shaky Start

All of a sudden, the Pittsburgh Pirates have won three straight games at Miller Park, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 9-6.

After falling behind 5-1, the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied back and eventually took the lead thanks to a three-run double by Gregory Polanco.

Takeaways

  • Josh Harrison had and excellent game at the plate collecting three hits in five at bats.  He also had two steals, two RBIs, and two runs scored.  Harrison is now batting .308 (33-107) when leading off this season.
  • Gregory Polanco gave the Pirates the lead tonight delivering a pinch hit, bases clearing double in the top of the sixth inning.  Polanco laced a 2-1 fastball into the right center field gap, his 30th of the year.  Josh Bell and Starling Marte also doubled.
  • Juan Nicasio was masterful out of the bullpen.  He pitched three scoreless innings,  giving up one hit, and striking out five.  His fastball played extremely well tonight with the slider complementing nicely.  Striking out five out of 10 batters faced is impressive.  Nicasio was definitely impressive tonight.  Neftali Feliz threw a scoreless ninth inning, earning his second save.

Throwaways

  • Jameson Taillon was not effective tonight giving up five runs over three innings pitched.  Hernan Perez had great success against Taillon hitting two home runs, driving in four.  Perez is now 5-7 with three home runs against Taillon.  Tonight’s outing ended a streak of seven straight quality starts for Jameson Taillon.  His ERA sits at 3.39 which is nice, but he has given up 10 home runs in 77 innings, a total higher than one would like to see.
  • Jeff Locke gave up a home run to a relief pitcher tonight on the first pitch he threw.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, Locke served up a first pitch fastball to Tyler Cravy and he didn’t miss it.  Cravy had not had a hit in his career before tonight.  He now has a home run.  Locke recovered nicely though and ended up tossing two innings, giving up the lone run.

W – Jeff Locke (9-7)

Blaine Boyer (1-3)

– Neftali Feliz (2)

Line of the Day

Juan Nicasio tossed three scoreless innings tonight, striking out five, allowing one hit and zero walks.
