Pittsburgh Pirates Takeaways & Throwaways -Seeing Red In Pittsburgh Once Again

In a frustrating fashion that is becoming their trademark, the Pittsburgh Pirates lose to the Cincinnati Reds 4-3, evening up the series at one each.

This loss brings the Pirates record to 69-70 and further diminishes their chances of making it into the postseason for a fourth year in a row.

Takeaways

  • Rookie pitcher Steven Brault had a decent start tonight giving up 5 hits in 5 innings, allowing 2 runs, 2 walks and striking out 2. He came into the game 0-2 and didn’t make up any ground. This team just can’t seem to get him a W.
  • In honor of African American Heritage month, the Pittsburgh Pirates wore throwback uniforms representing the Homestead Grays – a Negro League team formed in 1912 based near Pittsburgh. The Reds also wore throwback jerseys, replicas of the Cincinnati Tigers, from both the Independent and Negro American leagues. It was a very baseball way to show respect for the men who played the game, even when the game wasn’t ready to accept them.

Throwaways

  • Bad base running continues to plague the Buccos, with Gregory Polanco wasting a lead-off double in the second with a blunder. Then, in the sixth, Kang got picked off at first. You can’t score runs without men on base.
  • Pitchers who rake – Reds pitcher Tim Adleman went 2 for 2 on the night, scoring one run and one RBI. The Buccos pitched around catcher Ramon Cabrera to get to him in the fourth.

W – Raisel Iglesias (3-1)
L – Tony Watson (2 – 5)

Line of the Night
Jordy Mercer continues his quiet dominance for the Buccos. In 4 at bats, he had 2 runs, 2 hits, struck out once and pulled through a perfect sac bunt in the 9th to get David Freese and Francisco Cervelli into scoring position with the Reds leading by 1.
