In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
An agonizing season for Pittsburgh Pirates fans crystallized last night in a 12-2 drubbing at the hand of the Chicago Cubs. It was the 100th win of the Cubs’ season, and dropped the Pirates to two games under .500 at 77-79.
Starter Chad Kuhl stabilized after a bumpy first inning…and then the fourth inning happened. A leadoff single followed by a wild pitch, an HBP, and a bunt single led to Javier Baez’s grand slam. Three more singles would follow before Kuhl was mercifully lifted.
And as such, one inning perhaps summarized the 2016 season for the Pittsburgh Pirates pitching staff. Kuhl has been serviceable, even very good at times, but his struggles encapsulates everything that was bad about this year’s Pirates’ pitching corps. Across the field in the visitor’s dugout sat Cy Young candidate Kyle Hendricks, enjoying the type of overachieving season that had been Pittsburgh’s modus operandi in years past. It was another grim reminder that this season will have amounted to a wasted opportunity once all is said and done.
Now five games back with just six left to play, the club is now playing out the string.
Player Of The Game
After each game, win or lose, we call out to our twitter feed to choose a player of the game. This poll had the lowest votes of any of our polls, understandably so. Nevertheless, here are the results:
