In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Rookie of the Year?
Award Season is underway for Major League Baseball as the Gold Gloves were given out. The Pittsburgh Pirates really don’t have a ton of players up for major awards but they do have Joshua Bell. Josh Bell’s 2017 is one of the best rookie years in the franchise’s history. It’s unlikely the Pirates first baseman will take home the award because Cody Bellinger exists. However, this fact doesn’t make Josh Bell’s rookie campaign any less special. The kid electrified Pirates fans and for a team coming off a fairly mediocre season, it was nice to have a reason to pay attention every day.
Josh Bell did not get the attention of the national media but no one can deny how excellent his rookie year was. He slashed .255/.334/.466/.800 with 26 home runs and 90 RBI. Quite simply, he was one of the best players on the team. The Pittsburgh Pirates have spent the better part of a decade looking for an everyday first baseman and they definitely have one in Josh Bell.
It’s easy to overlook Josh Bell’s accomplishments because the Pirates only won 75 games but that should make you value Josh Bell’s contributions even more as he was one of the sole offensive threats on a very mediocre ballclub. Opposing teams knew they needed to stop Josh Bell and consistently he kept hitting and driving in runs. Josh Bell may not win the Rookie of the Year Award but the kid is special. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for the future superstar.
