Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call: Bitter Cold and a Lukewarm Hot Stove

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cutch Rumors Begin Again

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets are talking Andrew McCutchen. You aren’t reading news from the 2016 offseason as what’s old is new again. The Mets don’t seem like the best fit for McCutchen as they have several moves they need to make and dedicating $14.75MM to one player seems counterproductive.

Jon Morosi of MLB.com also reports that the San Francisco Giants have asked about McCutchen. This could potentially be a solid fit. However, the Giants have a thin farm system, so the only question is do they have the pieces?

A McCutchen trade before Opening Day seems somewhat unlikely to me. I don’t think the Pirates will really get as much as they hope. Their best bet is to keep McCutchen until the trade deadline and hopefully, he is in the middle of a great season. Teams do crazy things when they think they are one player away from a World Series run. That would be the best way to receive a great return for the former MVP.

I feel like a broken record but this offseason is so frustrating. I just want this team to commit to a direction. The Pirates don’t HAVE to trade Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen but if they opt to keep them, I think they should at least attempt to add some minor pieces and go for one last Wildcard Run. Turning a 75 win team into an 85 win team isn’t impossible and that should be enough to at least compete for a playoff spot. However, if management feels compelled to move McCutchen, Cole or even Josh Harrison, then it’s time to commit to the rebuild and retool for 2019 and beyond.
