Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call: To Boycott or not to Boycott?

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Fan Boycott

The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t had the best offseason from a fan perspective. They have traded away two of the biggest stars and fans are angry. At the moment there is a petition with over 50,000 signatures calling for Bob Nutting to sell the team. There is also a call on social media to boycott the Pirates 2018 season. This leads to an interesting question, should you punish the players for the sins of ownership/management?

The Pirates have some talented players on the roster but regardless of talent level, they will work hard. Should the fans ignore the team altogether or support the players? That is currently the question I am debating. I will obviously watch the team so I can cover them for this website but will it go beyond that? That’s something I am not sure about.

Full disclosure, I have had a Pirates season ticket package for the last 10 years and this is the first season I am genuinely debating not renewing my tickets. Though, likely not for the reasons you’d think. I am saddened by the Andrew McCutchen trade but I understand it. However, I am 30, married, and frankly, just busier than I used to be. Do I really want to dedicate 81 games to a rebuilding club? Will I have the motivation to drive downtown, pay for parking, walk to the stadium to see a team that is 51-68 in mid-August? When I was in college and had nothing but free time, Pirates tickets were a nice fun way to spend a summer evening. The team may have been bad but the game itself was good enough to get me to PNC Park. That may not be the case anymore. I won’t fully boycott the team but I can already feel my personal interest taking a dip. I never thought apathy would be how I’d describe my personal relationship with the Pittsburgh Pirates but that’s the only word that comes to mind.
