Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call – The “discomfort” word rears its ugly head again

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Last year, the word “discomfort” was commonly seen on injury reports for Pittsburgh Pirates players. At some point last season, players such as Andrew McCutchen, David Freese, Chris Stewart and Jordy Mercer had some sort of ailment involving discomfort.

Francisco Cervelli was another player who battled discomfort and other injuries in 2016. Cervelli also underwent surgery to repair a fractured left hamate bone in June and was limited to just 101 games played.

Cervelli felt more discomfort Sunday as he reportedly was removed from a workout with discomfort in his right foot.

This may not seem like a huge deal, especially since he’s listed as day-to-day, and it might not be. However, given Cervelli’s injury history, it may be cause for a little bit of concern. Cervelli did have an injury involving his right foot last season and it’s unclear if this injury will impact his preparation for the regular season.

Throw in the fact that he’s already bound to miss a portion of spring training to represent Italy in the World Baseball Classic, and it may be an even bigger issue. Of course, it’s unclear as to whether this injury could impact whether or not Cervelli plays or even represents Italy at the WBC as well.

It also puts even more emphasis on the health of Stewart and Elias Diaz, two guys that suffered through injury issues in 2016 too.

Fans will have to wait and see what the diagnosis is on Cervelli. However, regardless of whether the prognosis is good or not, seeing the dreaded “discomfort” word once again regarding a player’s injury status is not a pleasant sight for the Bucs.
