In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Kluber Dominates
The World Series began last night and the star was Corey Kluber. The Indians’ ace dominated the Cubs as he went six innings, allowed zero runs on four hits and struck out nine. He set a World Series record by becoming the first pitcher to strikeout eight men in three innings. Not bad for the “other” team in the World Series.
After Kluber’s performance, the Indians went down a similar path. Andrew Miller came in and threw two shutdown innings. Cody Allen shut the door and the Indians took a 1-0 series lead. It was the typical Indians’ playoff formula and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Veto THIS
The other star of the evening was “light-hitting” catcher Roberto Perez. Before the trade deadline, star catcher Jonathan Lucroy vetoed a trade to the Indians. That move made plenty of fans angry but I have a feeling they’re happy with Perez right now. Perez went 2-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
I am sure Lucroy’s veto was purely a business decision but if you’re a fan of the Indians, it’s hard not to take it personally. Cleveland fans can laugh about it now because they’re watching their team in the World Series and Lucroy’s Rangers were swept out of the playoffs.
Game Two
The World Series obviously isn’t just one game so this is still anyone’s series. Game two will actually begin an hour earlier than scheduled because of a weather advisory in Cleveland. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Trevor Bauer and his drone will take on Jake Arrieta and his beard. The Cubs went from being all anyone could talk about to facing a must-win game two. Teams have overcome 2-0 holes before but the odds would be against the Cubs if they go back to Chicago winless in Cleveland.
The Cubs went from being all anyone could talk about to facing a must-win game two. It’ll be interesting to see how Arrieta looks as since his inhuman domination ended, he’s had a few missteps. We will see what the first World Series start holds for the former Cy Young Award winner.
