Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Cutch amongst greatest Bucs of all time?

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pittsburgh Pirates 200 home run club is a very small group.

However, it is a group filled with some of the best players to ever wear a Pirates uniform. With a first inning home run in the Pirates 8-2 loss to Milwaukee Wednesday, Andrew McCutchen became a part of that history.

McCutchen blasted his 25th home run of the season off the first pitch he saw from Chase Anderson to become just the fourth player in Pirates history to reach the 200 home run plateau.

With the 30-year old joining Willie Stargell, Ralph Kiner and Roberto Clemente in the prestigious group, it brings along the question of where McCutchen stands amongst the all-time greats in team history.

While he’s nowhere near the level of those three hall of famers at this point in his career, McCutchen still has a lot of baseball yet to be played, and despite some struggles last year and at times this season, he still has a lot of home runs left to hit in his career.

It’s no secret that McCutchen’s future in Pittsburgh is unknown. Unlike Stargell and Clemente, it’s possible that McCutchen could go elsewhere before his career ends.

But that doesn’t diminish what he means to the organization and to the city. Along with putting up big numbers over the years, appearing in All-Star games and winning a National League Most Valuable Player award, McCutchen helped bring winning baseball back to Pittsburgh.

Yeah, this year has been disappointing, but you can’t forget what McCutchen and the Pirates did for the city from 2013-15. He helped bring hope back to the city and though the fun of a winning season has been absent the past two years, McCutchen has served as the franchise player for nearly 10 years and should be recognized as one of the best players in franchise history.
