Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Cutch’s resurgence continues in Philly

In our Daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Back in late May when Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen’s batting average dipped to the .200 mark, fans and media members alike wondered whether that version of “Cutch” was here to stay.

A little over a month has gone by and not many people are pondering those same thoughts. After a strong June that helped him garner National League Player of the Month honors, the Andrew McCutchen of old seems to be back – at least for now.

Tuesday was proof of McCutchen resurgence as he helped the Pirates end a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Aside from five shutout innings from Jameson Taillon and three solid innings from Pirates relievers including Daniel Hudson, Tony Watson, Juan Nicasio and Felipe Rivero, McCutchen provided the big offensive blows.

McCutchen went 3 for 5 in the victory with two solo home runs that made the difference. John Jaso drove in the Pirates other run, but Cutch attributed for three of the Bucs five hits. He also continued his dominance against the Phillies. In 14 career games against Philadelphia, McCutchen is 20 for 53 (.377) with seven home runs and 12 RBIs.

It is no secret how good McCutchen has been in the last month. After hitting .206 in May, Cutch hit .411 in June and is now off to a nice start in the month of July. He has raised his batting average drastically since his early season struggles, pushing it from a dreadful .200 clip to nearly .290.

He entered Tuesday’s game hitting just .250 in a pair of July contests, but his latest game improves that number.

Regardless of the Pirates current state – which isn’t pretty – it’s nice to see McCutchen returning to his usual form. With the team’s struggles, it is possible McCutchen may be in the midst of his final month as a Pirate. However, if that is indeed the case, he is finishing off his tenure in Pittsburgh in the only way possible: by just being Cutch.
