Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – The Cy Young Awards

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

American League

Normally I start with the NL in this kind of post but Kate Upton didn’t tweet about the NL. The American League Cy Young Award race was extremely close. Eventually, it went to Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox. Porcello went 22-4 with a 3.15ERA/3.40FIP/1.009WHIP. He just barely edged out Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander. Verlander finished the year with slightly better overall numbers. (3.04ERA/3.48FIP/1.001WHIP) However, he had six fewer wins than Porcello, which likely cost him the Award.

Justin Verlander’s supermodel girlfriend, Kate Upton fire off some NSFW tweets when the announcement was made official:

Porcello and Verlander were long-time teammates in Detroit so I doubt Verlander was too upset about the result. However, you gotta respect Upton’s passion and fire for her man when she feels he was slighted. Personally, I do think Verlander deserved the award more than Porcello but both are worthy candidates in my book.

National League

By comparison, the National League Cy Young Award seemed almost boring. Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals walked away with the award. With the win, Scherzer becomes just the sixth pitcher to win the award in both the NL and the AL. It’s pretty hard to argue against Max’s win. He went 20-7 with a 2.96ERA/3.24FIP/0.968WHIP. He lead the league in innings pitched and games started.

There were no supermodels firing off tweets at the NL result but it’s still a notable victory. When Scherzer won the AL award in 2014, he rejected an extension with the Tigers. He gambled on himself and won in a big way. He cashed in with the Nationals and has only gotten better. You have to admire how great Scherzer is and how he’s still one of the most likable guys in the sport.
