Late inning magic turns to extra inning sadness

Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Miami Marlins 4-3 in 12 innings on a walk off double by Christian Yelich. The Pirates were no- hit through six innings by Wei-Yin Chen before battling back and tying the ball game with runs in the seventh and ninth inning.

The Pirates lost three out of four to the Marlins and really did not play a very strong series outside of game one. The Pirates finish their road trip 2-5, which is obviously not the result anyone wanted. The Pirates won game one of each series, but then lost out to lose back to back series.

Juan Nicasio wasn’t terrible but he wasn’t very good either. He went six innings, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four. Over his last five starts, Nicasio has a 6.23ERA, allowing 18 runs in 26 innings of work. He is the most likely candidate to lose his starting job when Jameson Taillon is called up at some point in mid June.

John Jaso not only hit the game-tying single in the ninth inning, but also wins our coveted player of the game award.

Discomfort for everyone

Francisco Cervelli, Jordy Mercer, Andrew McCutchen and David Freese all left the game with some form of discomfort last night and while there is no update on any of the players, Cervelli’s injury in particular did not look good as he was hit solidly on the foot by a Chen fastball and needed some assistance to stand up and while he initially stayed in the game, he didn’t last long as he was removed in the fourth inning.

The Pirates will begin a series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight at 7:05 and it remains to be seen who will be in the lineup and if any reinforcements will arrive from Triple-A.
