In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
With the departure of Gerrit Cole, the Pirates have quite a big void to fix atop its starting rotation.
But have no fear, Jameson Taillon is here.
Despite only having started 43 games in his major league career, it’s clear that Taillon is expected to take on a bigger role as one of the Pirates top starting pitchers. And I think this will be a role he’ll thrive in.
Why you may ask? Well, over the course of his young major league career, Taillon has shown what he is capable of. Especially in 2016 when he went 5-4 in 18 starts while posting a 3.38 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.
He has the pure talent and the make up to be a top of the rotation major league pitcher, and now he has the opportunity to go along with it.
Now, some may be hesitant to think Taillon is ready to take on the role as a top of the rotation starter given the fact that he had his fair share of struggles last season, posting an ERA over 6.00 in the months of July and August. But consider what the 26-year old went through last season, overcoming testicular cancer and coming back while trying to bounce back both mentally and physically.
And while he did struggle, Taillon found a way to finish the season strong, sporting a 3.25 ERA in five September starts to end the 2017 season.
The best is still yet to come for Taillon and his potential cannot be matched by many. I know that most Pirates fans are expected to boycott games this season, and they have every reason to.
But, if one decides to look on the bright side, the play and potential emergence of Taillon as the face of the Pirates rotation may be worth the price of admission.
