Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – The Fall Classic Begins

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 2016 World Series

Tonight is the night! The World Series begins in Cleveland, Ohio as the Indians take on the Chicago Cubs. If you’re a baseball fan, there’s truly something magical about the World Series. To me, it’s always been bittersweet. Legends are made in October but it also means winter is coming.

The World Series also feels different because Pittsburghers know what playoff baseball tastes like and this year they were denied that. Watching one of your division rivals playing for baseball’s greatest prize is a tough pill to swallow. The Cubs had a similar rebuild as the Pirates. They took their lumps but due to some deeper pockets, they were able to jump right into being championship contenders. They have a lot of homegrown talent but this team is buying a large chunk of this run. Their biggest strength is their pitching staff and that is almost entirely externally developed.

They have plenty of homegrown talent but this team is buying a large chunk of this run. Their biggest strength is their pitching staff and that is almost all externally developed. Good for the Cubs having the resources but doesn’t make it any easier to watch.

As much as it pains me to say this, I think the nearly week-long layoff hurts the Indians and the Cubs finally break the curse. I think they win the World Series in five games. I asked our followers how they see the series playing out and these are the results:

Cleveland: City of Champions?

The Cubs are getting a bulk of the attention for their World Series curse but the Indians haven’t won since 1948. They have fans that deserve to see their team hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy, too.

Cleveland isn’t championship-starved, however as the Cavs won the NBA title back in the spring. Which means if the Indians can finish the job, Cleveland will earn the title of “City of Champions.” Cleveland went from 1960-2016 without any major sports titles and now they could win two in the same calendar year. Pittsburgh and Cleveland don’t get along but it’s hard not to be happy for such a long-suffering fan base.
