Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Ugly From the Start

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top pitching prospect got roughed up.

That’s an awfully plain and simple way to look at it, but the fact is there was nothing plain and simple about Tyler Glasnow‘s start last night. By now, you all know the line – 1.2 IP – 4 Hits – 5 Walks and 5 earned runs. But you could also point to the fact that he had but one strikeout, as perhaps the biggest indicator that Glasnow’s stuff just was not working. He missed high, he missed low, and he missed often. As many pointed out, the live stuff that Glasnow displayed all through Spring Training was nowhere to be found. Would his start have been a less bitter pill to swallow if he had, say, 5 strikeouts to go along with those walks and hits?

Tough to say, but it would have been welcomed. If Pittsburgh Pirates fans had at least seen a bit of the strikeout stuff that was shown all spring, maybe they would feel better about the team’s best pitching prospect, the one the team held onto at all costs this offseason.

A Throwaway?

“This is one you just throw away.”

That quote – relayed by the Trib’s Rob Biertempfel – is one you might typically hear from any given pitcher after a start akin to the one Glasnow suffered through. But for the 23-year old, last night was not just a throwaway start. While I would stop short of saying that this start will portend more of the same from the tall right-hander, his inability to fight back has to concern the Pittsburgh Pirates’ brass.
