Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – The good and the bad of the Wild Card

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pittsburgh Pirates know all too well about the excitement and cruel nature the wild card game. The Pirates have been on both the winning and the losing sides of the game, defeating the Cincinnati Reds in 2013 and losing to the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

If anyone knows how amazing the game can be and how much it can also rip your heart out, it’s Pirates fans and those who follow baseball in Pittsburgh.

Tuesday’s American League Wild Card game was no different than the others. Quite simply, it was an instant classic. The Twins opened up with the momentum, taking advantage of a shaky start by Luis Severino, but the Yankees tied the game on a three-run home run by Didi Gregorius. The Twins could only muster one more run while the Yankees would add five more in an 8-4 victory.

The Pirates can relate to both sides. The elation and excitement during and following the Pirates wild card win in 2013 was something I had never seen before. While the disappointment Twins fans are now feeling is something that has been felt by Pirates fans on more than one occasion.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about the wild card game. While it’s disappointing for a team to have such a successful season just to have it end after one game, the atmosphere is unbelievable and with the stakes being so high, it makes for an amazingly entertaining brand of baseball.

From the Kansas City Royals walking it off against the Oakland Athletics in 2014 and going on to the World Series to Russell Martin‘s home run in 2013 after Johnny Cueto dropped the ball, sending PNC park into a frenzy, the wild card game has provided some great moments. And trust me, the best are still yet to come.
