In our Daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Coming in to last night’s contest with the Colorado Rockies, the Pittsburgh Pirates had a prime opportunity to extend their winning streak to five games while gaining even more ground in the National League Central.
However, rookie Raimel Tapia had four hits and Ian Desmond homered while German Marquez pitched five solid innings to lead the Rockies past the Bucs, 5-1, to salvage a game in the three game series.
While Colorado escaped with the victory, the bigger story surrounded Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl who was the bad luck loser once again. Kuhl, who allowed three earned runs in five innings, suffered the loss. He hasn’t earned a victory since his season debut April 8 against the Atlanta Braves.
Kuhl pitched well enough to deserve the victory, throwing 51 of his 75 pitches for strikes and only walking one and allowing four hits, but the Pirates offense struggled to get anything going, finishing with just six hits.
While Kuhl has been winless, he hasn’t pitched terribly. He has actually been relatively consistent in his last three outings, going five innings in each while giving up a total of six runs.
If there is one negative thing to take away from Kuhl’s season so far, it’s that he hasn’t really had very lengthy outings. In fact, Kuhl has only pitched in to the seventh inning once this season. Despite that small negative, Kuhl has done what it takes to earn wins on the mound, keeping the team in games and giving them an opportunity to win ball games.
Kuhl is your prototypical number five starter and while his overall numbers don’t look good, he continued his string of solid outings Wednesday, a stretch that he can hopefully continue moving forward.
