Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – One Last Series

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates a Victim of MLB Scheduling Snafu?

Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost an ugly one to the Colorado Rockies by a score of 11-5. You can check out our Takeaways and Throwaways from yesterday, but suffice to say, it was a tough spot for the club. The team flew to Colorado immediately after their game on Wednesday, played the hastily scheduled makeup game, and flew right back to Pittsburgh, where they will open a three game slate against the division rival St. Louis Cardinals.

The team will not make any excuses for the lopsided loss, and nor should they. After all, Jeff Locke flew to Colorado in advance, and the team had a fresh bullpen arm in Kyle Lobstein. Still, it’s hard not to wonder if the highly unusual circumstances might have led to some flat performances.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

After the three-game series with the Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have their first true day off in 30 calendar days. There were two rainouts during that time frame, but no true days off. The MLB season is a the most grueling in all of sports, and these days off are prized by players, if only for mental rest.

The team will do well to keep focused over these next three days.  The Cardinals come in having won four of their last five, and are currently tied with the Pirates at 32-28. Though the Chicago Cubs are still the class of the National League, it will be important for the club to create some separation between itself and the Cardinals.

Clint Hurdle will have to ensure that his charges have the right mindset at the end of this harrowing stretch.
