Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call – Don’t Count on Frankie

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ last series of their current home stand started on a sour note yesterday. Francisco Liriano struggled once again in an eventual 7-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

It was LOB city again for the Pirates as Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte and Jung Ho Kang were responsible for 10 of the club’s 13 runners left on base. The inability to capitalize on chances for big innings is a problem that has doomed the Pirates for at least two seasons now.

A prime example would be the seventh inning, when Gregory Polanco and David Freese got on base with zero outs, but the team was not able to scratch a run across.

If this team has any intention of making the playoffs, their performance in this area needs a complete 180.

Liriano Off Again

Liriano did not have a good night. Buoyed by his recent 13 strikeout/zero walk effort, many felt “Filthy Frankie” was back to stay. Last night’s line – 3.1 IP/8 H/7 ER/4 BB/ 3 K/2 HR – may have been his ugliest of the season.

We have spent the better part of two weeks talking about potential Pittsburgh Pirates trade acquisitions. The vast majority have been starting pitchers. Though we broke down how various additions can help the club, in the back of our minds – and fan’s minds – we counted on the return of the “Good Liriano” as an acquisition of sorts.

Last night proved that thought was foolish. Francisco Liriano is now a liability every time he steps on the mound.
