In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
Locke’d down
Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Miami Marlins by a score of 10-0. The big story of the evening was Jeff Locke throwing a complete game, three hit shutout. Locke was absolutely brilliant from pitch one as he faced only one above the minimum. He was helped out by some spectacular defense, including two double plays. The start was easily the best of Jeff Locke’s Major League career and more than the Pirates could have hoped for with their fifth starter on the mound.
Yesterday’s Player of the Game
After each game – win or lose – we put out a Twitter Poll to find out who you feel should take home ‘Player of the Game’ honors.
Here is last night’s player of the game twitter pool. A fairly obvious outcome as Jeff Locke runs away with it. A complete game shutout makes it a fairly easy choice.

Hot cup of coffee
The other star of the game last night was Gregory Polanco. He hit the first grand slam of his career, as he finished 2-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. He was absolutely tremendous and really just more of what we’ve seen all season so far. Polanco always had the tools, but had many ups and downs early in his MLB career. So far in 2016, it appears he has put it all together and is the superstar we all hoped he would become.
A south Florida Freeze
David Freese also had a big game, collecting four hits, driving in two runs and scoring two more. He was another big part of the victory and seems to have secured a fairly consistent starting job when the team is facing a left handed pitcher. He’s currently hitting .296 with a .802OPS. When he was signed here late in Spring Training, it was expected he’d be a fairly solid acquisition, but he has exceeded all expectations and has earned his current role as the right handed hitter of the first base platoon.
