Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – A Long Overdue Grand Slam

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

He finally did it

Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates easily beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-1. The man of the hour was Andrew McCutchen. He went 4-4 with two home runs and EIGHT RBIs. That slash line is memorable but Andrew McCutchen finally did what many thought he would never accomplish as he hit his first career grand slam.

Andrew McCutchen was definitely aware of the elusive grand slam as he took to Twitter after the game and tweeted one simple word:

McCutchen’s performance was so good that he had two curtain calls. It was a special moment for a special player in Pirates’ history. No one knows what the future is for the former MVP. He has an option for 2018 but he could also be the subject of trade talks once again. If last night’s game was one of the final home games for Cutch, then it was truly an incredible way to go out. This season has been mediocre for a variety of reasons but the biggest positive has been Andrew McCutchen’s return to glory. Last year was a lost season for McCutchen and for the first two months of this season, it seemed like all hope was lost for the 2013 MVP. However, it’s clear there is still some magic in McCutchen’s bat.

Enjoy the final handful of games this season because there’s a chance they’re the last time you could see Andrew McCutchen in a Pirates’ uniform.

Mark Madden’s Favorite Player

When a player has eight RBIs, it’s obvious why he’s going to the center of attention. However, another player deserves a little bit of recognition. Trevor Williams had another excellent start for the Pirates. He went six innings, allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts. Williams has been the Pirates most consistent starting pitcher during the second half of the season. In 75.1 innings, Williams has a 3.35ERA. Williams may never be a superstar but he’s definitely earned a rotation spot next year.

In 75.1 innings, Williams has a 3.35ERA. Not bad for a guy destined for the Minor Leagues, heh? Williams may never be a superstar but he’s definitely earned a rotation spot next year. When a team has a poor season, it’s important to find bright spots anywhere you can and Williams is most certainly a bright spot. I am already looking forward to seeing how Williams develops and performs in the coming years.
