In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Final Off Day
Yesterday the Pittsburgh Pirates had their final off-day of the 2017 season. This has been a disappointing season for a variety of reasons. When I think back on this year, the first thing that comes to mind is inconsistency. The Pirates were never able to fully put it all together. At times the offense was great and the pitching fell apart. Other times, it was the inverse. The team never really felt complete. As the team limps to the finish line, most fans have already stopped paying attention and who can really blame them?
Following a baseball team is a commitment and trying to dedicate a full 162 to a mediocre team is exhausting. Kudos to any fan that has followed along for the entire disappointing ride. I love baseball and regardless of the quality of the local team, I will miss them when they’re gone. Knowing that I have a team to watch daily is what makes baseball so comforting. Even when the Pirates are bad, at least they’re there. I am sure it’ll feel like a relief when the final out of the 2017 season is recorded but I guarantee you, it won’t take long for you to start thinking about Spring Training 2018.
I miss the showers
My favorite part of September baseball is watching team’s drench each other in champagne and beer as they celebrate clinching playoff berths. However, this year it just reminds me that the Pirates have been dry the last two seasons. I, like a lot of fans, look back in the 2013 season a lot. The team finally celebrating a playoff berth for the first time since 1992 was genuinely special. Watching the team I grew up supporting finally getting to spray each other with champagne was incredible.
You will see a lot of teams celebrate in the coming weeks and despite the lack of Pirates involve, enjoy the playoffs. The MLB Playoffs have a lot of exciting storylines. Will the Dodgers finally get over the hump? Will the Nationals exorcize the ghosts of playoff failures past? Will the Indians finish what they started last year? The MLB Playoffs are a sign that winter is coming and soon we will have no baseball in our daily lives.
