Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – A Microcosm of the Season

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

From drama to tragedy

Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Washington Nationals 5-4. The game started off on a fairly poor note as Ivan Nova was forced to exit early because of an injured finger. Leaving the game because of an injury isn’t the ending Ivan Nova had in mind I am sure but it brings an end to his up and down 2017. Nova started the year looking like an ace but his second half was a disaster. His overall numbers are fairly solid as he finishes with a 4.14ERA. Ivan Nova could put up this exact season again and still be worth his contract but it is important that Nova bounces back next year because the team needs him to pitch well if they have any chance of competing in 2018.

The game was tied until the Nationals pulled ahead in the seventh inning. The ninth inning began with an Andrew McCutchen single and Josh Bell did the rest. Bell may not get the recognition of the other National League rookies but he has been absolutely outstanding this year. Bell is putting up numbers that no Pirates rookie since Jason Bay has put up. Josh Bell seems like a superstar in the making and his continued development will be fascinating to watch.

Entertaining on Twitter, not so much on the field

Last night’s losing pitcher was Daniel Hudson as he allowed three straight hits to give the Nationals the victory. The Pirates signed Hudson to be the anchor of their middle relief but he has been a disaster.

Following last night’s game, Hudson’s ERA sits at 4.45, which doesn’t sound THAT bad. However, he has failed this team in numerous big spots. Last night was another example of Hudson’s inability to consistently get big outs. The worst part is Hudson is guaranteed $5.5 million next year so it’s unlikely the team will part ways with him after this season. The fans and more importantly the team need to hope Hudson bounces back in 2018 because unless he’s released, he will be in a Pirates’ uniform come Spring Training.
