Pittsburgh Pirates fans are understandably antsy (or should it be angsty?) as the 2018 season fast approaches.
They have seen arguably the club’s best pitcher and a franchise icon traded away within one week of each other. They have sat by as the club flat out refuses to get involved in the free agent market to any measurable degree.
The endless debate, the ridiculous petitions and the hours of sports talk radio swirl about the team. Some of that — and more — is justified. A large chunk isn’t.
The Ski Lift Conspiracy Theorists, the hot take artists, the armchair general managers, hell even the armchair franchise owners have all had their say. And what they’re saying isn’t exactly pleasant for those who walk into work at 115 Federal Street each day.
To those folks, I have this to say today: using the signing of Daniel Nava as the fulcrum of your anger is a worthless endeavor, to say nothing of how misguided doing so may be.
Since Nava’s signing — a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training — I have heard countless derivations of the same. exact. joke.
“World Series bound!”
“Who says Bob Nutting was cheap!”
“McCutchen who? This is the signing that puts us in the Series!”
Perhaps it was folly to think that Pittsburgh Pirates fans in their current state could look at the Nava signing for what it is – a low-risk signing that every single team in Major League Baseball emulates every single year.
Yes, the club could have been more active in a year when market conditions clearly work in its favor. Yes, Virginia, payroll could be higher. Yes, the club has more question marks than concrete answers as it stands less than one week away from Bradenton.
But, sorry, no. The Nava signing is not the new nexus of Pittsburgh Pirates angst.
