In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Moroff With the Walk-Off
Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates once again beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2. It was the Pirates’ third straight victory over the first place team in the central. This one seemed like the least likely as Zach Davies kept the Pirates in check for the most of the evening. However, the Pirates were apparently just buying their time. The team fell behind late in the eighth inning but staged a dramatic, ninth inning comeback and eventually walked it off in the 10th.
Max Moroff has been much-maligned for most of his team at the Big League level. Pretty much any time people see his name in the lineup, there is some rage. However, he’s been swinging a better bat lately as he hit his first home run on Sunday and had his first walk-off on Wednesday. Not bad, Mr. Moroff, not bad at all!
The victory clinched a series victory for the Pirates, pulled them within four games of first place AND was their 10th win in their last 12 games. Outside of the volcano-hot Dodgers, the Pirates are the hottest team in baseball right now. They picked a great time to start playing some of their most inspired baseball of the season. Last night’s game looked like a classic loss until it didn’t. The Pirates could have just accepted their fate and chalked it up as “one of those nights,” but they battled back late by taking advantage of the rare opportunities they were given. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way the Pirates have shown they have grit and a ton of heart.

A Great Opportunity
The Pirates will go for the sweep of the Brewers today, but that isn’t the only good opportunity in front of them. Of their next 22 games, only FIVE are against teams with records above .500. The Pirates suddenly have a great chance to not only get back to .500 and above but maybe really make some noise in the NL Central race. Obviously, the team has to play the games and a lot could change over the next month of baseball but it’s hard not to feel a little excited about this team’s chances right now.
The Pirates have faced a ton of adversity so far this season, especially in man-games lost. However, for the first time in a long time, they have a full arsenal of weapons. Starling Marte is back and has already contributed. Gregory Polanco is picking up steam. Most importantly, the bullpen seems to have finally turned a corner. What the Pirates do with this chance is up to them. However, it’s fun to watch some meaningful baseball again. PNC Park actually feels alive for the first time since early in the 2016 season.
